Ferrosilicon (FeSi) is an essential alloy in the steel industry and special Ferrosilicon with high silicon content increases strength and wear resistance, elasticity (spring steels), scale resistance (heat resistant steels) and lowers electrical conductivity (electrical steels). Ferrosilicon is produced by reduction of silicon dioxide (quartz or sand) with a carbon reductant (coal and/or coke) in presence of iron in an electric arc furnace at high temperatures of about 2 000oC.
In order to manufacture these special Ferrosilicon products, tailor made coals are used with specific physical and chemical properties. The HiPure coal from CleanCarbon is developed in close cooperation with the industry and especially designed for Ferrosilicon production.
The high reactivity, excellent product stability and special size distribution of HiPure secure a high yield and excellent quality of the final Ferrosilicon product. The low ash content secure low amounts of impurities, such as Titanium, in the metal.
The CleanCarbon low ash coals are manufactured at our plant in Sines, Portugal and shipped world wide in bulk vessels or in bulk containers.
